Under the patronage of the Presidency of Al-Ameed University and the Deanships of the Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry, the Psychological Counseling and Educational/Academic Guidance Division at the College of Medicine organized a field visit to the Elderly Care Center in its prefabricated facility in the Holy Governorate of Karbala. The visit, which included the participation of several students from both colleges, is part of a series of humanitarian and community activities adopted by the university to instill the values of kindness and benevolence in its students.
The visit was supervised by Asst. Prof. Dr. Lamia Abdul Kareem (Director of the Division), Counselor Mariam Ali, and Ms. Azhar Abbas. The visit aimed to provide psychological and moral support to the elderly and to engage students in volunteer activities that enhance intergenerational communication.
The activities included presenting symbolic gifts and essential necessities to the residents, holding dialogue sessions with the elderly to listen to their life stories and experiences, and engaging in joint recreational activities that brought joy to their hearts. Additionally, a field tour of the center's departments was conducted to learn about the medical and care services provided. Students also participated in giving haircuts to willing residents and serving a group lunch in a warm, humane atmosphere.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Lamia Abdul Kareem stated: "This visit comes within the framework of Al-Ameed University's efforts to instill humanitarian and social values in its students by linking the academic side with social responsibility and enhancing their awareness of the importance of communicating with different segments of society, especially the elderly who deserve all care and appreciation.”
She added that the university seeks to continue such initiatives that combine science and humanity, given their significant educational and psychological impact on building a well-rounded student personality.
At the conclusion of the visit, Al-Ameed University extended its thanks and appreciation to the center's administration for their warm reception and cooperation, stressing that this step is part of a series of community initiatives the university intends to continue in the future.
